Algae ATBI of 2004
Algae ATBI of 2004
This is the 2004 portion of Algal studies undertaken in the park as part of the ATBI, and having been directed by Jeff Johansen (John Carroll University), Rex Lowe (Bowling Green State University) and Susan Carty (Heidelberg College), and have involved the following students: Susan Makosky (BGSU), Shannon Gomez (JCU), Catie Olsen (JCU), Paula Furey (BGSU), Jen Ress (BGSU), Linda Novitsky (BGSU), and Evan Thomas (BGSU). A publication has just come out which lists the compiled and new records. This paper reports a total of 1000 algal species records: 190 Cyanobacteria, 108 Chlorophyta, 137 Charophyta (Klebsormidiophyceae,
Zygnematophyceae), 21 Dinophyta, 19 Euglenophyta, 1 Cryptophyta, and 5 Rhodoplantae (Cyanidiophyta, Rhodophyta). Kingdom Stramenopila included the following numbers of taxa in eight phyla: 3 Chrysophyta, 7 Synurophyta, 1 Prymnesiophyta, 1 Raphidiophyta, 16 Tribophyta, 2 Eustigmatophyta, 488 Bacillariophyta, and 1 Phaeophyta. These totals include 82 taxa (“sp.” or as “cf.” taxa) which are potentially new to science.
We encountered one taxon that was morphologically similar to Merismopedia trolleri. However, the color and thylakoid structure were incorrect for that taxon, and we were able to subsequently identify this distinctive bacterium as Thiopedia rosea.
We continue to work on past collections and write papers. Thus far, our
research group has written 11 manuscripts which have thus far been
published, are in press, or been submitted for review.
