DLIA Photography Internship

DLIA Photography Internship

One of the main goals of Discover Life in America is to share the beauty and diversity of life in the Smokies with the world.  There is no better way to accomplish this than through the medium of photography.  Each summer, DLIA selects one promising undergraduate nature photographer to help us document the wonder of the world around us.

The photography intern is expected to:

  • Possess considerable experience in the art of photography, as well as a camera suitable for producing work of professional quality
  • Document the life they encounter in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park
  • Assist in planning, staffing, and documenting DLIA educational, fundraising, and citizen-science events
  • Be able to use Adobe Photoshop (or similar program) to create attractive brochures and educational materials
  • Contribute to and maintain our extensive image database
  • Be responsible, honest, reliable, and hardworking

In addition to these requirements, all interns should be able to hike for several miles with a pack over rough terrain, be comfortable with using computers for word processing and website management, be courteous with DLIA and National Park staff, and be able to express themselves effectively both orally and in writing.

The internship lasts for ten weeks in the summer, although the length and dates are flexible. The workplace is at Twin Creeks Natural Resource Center, just a mile outside of Gatlinburg, TN. Usually, we are able to offer interns Park housing at no cost to them in the Twin Creeks area, but this changes from year to year, as does the amount of the stipend offered to defray living expenses.

In the past, we have been helped by diverse interns with diverse interests.  Students have photographed for us with many different majors and career goals.   We strive to allow interns to use this opportunity to explore anything and everything they wish.
