By Chuck Cooper - Posted on 21 August 2010

Order Information::

Hymenoptera is the order of insects that includes the ants, wasps, bees, and sawflies. They have two pairs of wings and  chewing mouthparts. Many wasps and bees are equipped with stingers for defense and/or immobilizing prey. It is also the only order besides Isoptera (termites) to have evolved complex social systems with division of labor.

Prior to the DLIA we knew of 266 species in the Park.  Now, we have 811 species; 23 of these discoveries are new to science and 522 are new to the Park.
