In Case You Didn't Know ...
Phylum Chordata, in the Smokies, is made up of animals in the subphylum, Vertebrata. These animals possess backbones (vertebrae). Other subphyla of Chordata actually do not have backbones and can only be found in marine environments. Of the Chordata species inhabiting the Park, all also possess a boney skeleton with the exception of the lamprey. This eel-like aquatic organism group keeps a completely cartilaginous skeleton throughout its life.
